This is an introduction to mathematical modelling. Pupils are encouraged to engage in an inquiry to answer a question using a method analogous to the way in which models are used to make public policy decisions.

Aims

  • To consider if reducing the number of car journeys we take has a bigger impact on our carbon foot print than reducing our dairy consumption calculate.
  • To reflect on how we can make informed choices about the impact of our lifestyles on CO2 emissions.

Maths content you might address through this activity includes:

  • Applying the correct mathematical vocabulary, notation and appropriate units in a range of contexts.
  • Using estimation and rounding to estimate and check the reasonableness of a solution
  • Considering the context of the question when determining the reasonableness of the solution.
  • Selecting the appropriate degree of accuracy for the given task.
