Schools for Children

Ada Fluder and Logan Need, P6 pupils at Dalry primary school in Edinburgh explain how their campaign to support Education for All resulted in an invitation to the House of Commons in London.

Schools for Children

At Dalry Primary School in Edinburgh, we have a citizenship team called Schools for Children (SFC). The citizenship team consists of 3 primary 6 children and 2 primary 7 children. The teacher that helps them is Mrs Laidler and they meet up every Monday at 12 o clock. Mrs Laidler is a primary 1 teacher and does citizenship with some classes in the school.

The SFC is an amazing citizenship team whose main aim is to raise awareness that 58 million children don’t go to school worldwide.

We started off by writing ideas on sticky notes and deciding on the ones we would like to do. We then designed logos and created posters. The group made an I-movie. In the I-movie we interviewed teachers and members of the community and asked if they knew how many children in the world don’t go to school. You can see the movie here. LINK to school notice board.

The team then went to Augustine’s Church in Edinburgh, along with 5 other schools and showed their movies. All the schools did presentations. We then got into different groups and did various activities like: story teller, global citizenship games, learnt about fair-trade and there was an artist who turned our ideas into pictures.

The SFC want to continue raise awareness about how many children don’t go to school. They also designed posters to display around the local area. The SFC invited Joanna Cherry (Joanna Cherry is our MP) to speak to her about the situation that a lot of children don’t go to school and how they could help. After the chat, Joanna Cherry invited them to the House of Commons in London. They are going in March and are all very excited.

The children are very happy that they have been part of this project and that they get to learn about what is happening to children in other country’s compared to them. Thank you for reading this article and please support the SFC!
